Belaharr: Tribal dance music from Texas

Howdy, y'all

Belaharr is a drum and dance troupe in Austin, Texas . We have a new CD out of the music we perform and dance to, much of it is great for tribal and/or fusion. You might hear something you want to perform to. And I just couldnt resist contacting tribal dancers in Australia!!

You can hear a few of the songs at cdbaby.com/cd/belaharr or www.rythmpig.com (my personal website), and order the CD either place. If you like any of the sample songs and end up dancing to them, let me hear from you because I love to hear which ones people like the most.

Hey! I am going to Australia from Dec 20 to Jan 12 with my husband, who is from Perth Australia (I am Puerto Rican, both living in California) and I was wondering if there's any bellydancing class I can go there while in the Holidays and maybe a venue to assist? Any info will be appreciated!

It turns out you don't have to have an ABN or BN to need the PPCA licence. *Anyone* who plays music anywhere, whether it be at studio, rented room, or during performances, have to have this new-ish (since Nov '05) licence.

It doesn't matter how many hours you teach, but it is scaled more for business type (ie a studio that holds 4+ classes a day, 5 or more days a week) so even if you teach 4 classes a week on different days, you have to pay for the full business day fee.

Not particularly fair IMO, but that is how they are currently structured.

Merchants/Vendors Sites

After several complaints from some of our students about vendors of jewelry, clothing and other dance items, I felt that it needed to be posted.

It did put a few noses out of joint, but it really needed to be mentioned.

When vendors post on mailing lists that they currently have new merchandise available, there should actually be merchandise available. Too often, some of our students that have limited access to the net, or low dial up speeds (not everyone has broad band) have wait for these graphic intensive sites to load up the pictures, click and shuffle through menus, only to have the word SOLD next to most of the items.

If the items is sold, it should be removed from the list, or as one person has done, on a different page as a "Sold Gallery" so people can see what might be available again.

Now I know that with the festivals that are running, updating webpages can be time consuming, but one email from a mailing listed posted 2 minutes before I went to see the site, only to find the new merchandise pegged as SOLD. Sadly, this isn't an uncommon occurence.

Questioned about hair

I have extemely long hair. When I get ready for performances, I have several options.

Two braids, one behind each ear. Single thick braid. Wrap it up in a bun. And my favorite, yet very time consuming pinky finger braids. Pull hair into a high pony tail, and then separate it and make several (a dozen or more) braids.

When I do that, the inevitable "where did you get your extensions?". Then comes the amazement when I tell them it's my own hair.

Is having your own plaits/braids really that uncommon?

Even though it says so on the page, I figured I would put it here too.

I had found some scrumptious leopard print plush fabric that I wanted to make a choli from. The original choli pattern would not work, as there was no stretch with the leopard cloth. So, after doing some measuring of both our original choli pattern, and of myself to see how the 'geometry of stretch' needed to be adjusted, I came up with this:

www.blackswantribe.com.au/cholipattern2.html

I made the leopard one and you can scroll to the bottom to see how it came out. And it wasn't just a fluke, as I made another one last night, tiger print this time, and wore it today at our regular Monday lunch hour performance.

B.S.T First student hafla!

After almost a year of teaching, and practicing, and fine tuning, we had our first student hafla. 4 groups, all of them up them up there dancing with us and each other. Then a grand finale with us all together. It was a magical, and amazing evening. A few bobbles, lots of family and friends, and mega fun.

Adaptability of Tribal Costume

The weather here has been getting damp and chilly. The choli and coinbra combination is a bit bare for comfort as our regular gig is in an open air cafe/restaurant. No matter how much we warm up, we can feel the shivering starting in our bellies and working its' way through the rest of us.

I love the adaptabilty of Tribal costuming. It can be changed without losing the the tribal look and feel.

We will still be wearing hip shawl, pantaloons, tassel belts, and head gear, but instead of the choli and bra we will be wearing slit sided, down to the mid-shin cotton tunic. the coin bra *could* be worn over it. I think we will give it a run without the bra the first time, and see how it goes.

Well, I finally have the time to sit here and just post a hello to all.

Its been very hectic the past few weeks/months, and there is time to breathe now (that and posting on other places like Live Journal and Orkut and I kept forgetting.)
